What Makes Schools Great

There are plenty of reasons that schools are great for kids. Schools are a great place to learn. In school, you can learn about different traditions, races, religions, backgrounds, etc. When I was still in school I went to a public school and If I has stayed at home for homeschooling I would have never gotten the chance to meet people of different backgrounds than me and learn from them. With so many classrooms having an inclusive library students are getting the chance to read about many topics about people who aren't like them from authors who are not like them. This is an experience you cannot get outside of school. Another reason schools are great is that they can also help you build socialization. When I was in school it was one of the few places I can talk to my peers and not adults like my parents. This helped build my language more than anything. School is also a great place to learn about routine, behavior, and rules. This is all beneficial for kids t...

What should be taught?

The video from "Get Lit" was amazing and eye-opening to watch. I have seen a few of their videos and they are all amazing. I think they pointed out a lot of good examples of ways teachers teach things to students without even realizing it. I think this was a good reminder that learning is not always lecturing. I have seen kids pick up on things no one has spoken about verbally. One of the things this reminds me of is a topic I am talking about in my ECE class. We were talking about gender stereotypes and how it only takes them seeing the mom doing the same characteristics or actions over and over for them to pick up on it. I loved learning the three categories of the curriculum.  I think the category I was most familiar with was the explicit curriculum because it is the most visible one. although I have seen the explicit one in school I think social media is highlighting right now is the book ban in the null category. This is making so many people mad because they believe ch...

Are schools segregated?

Are Schools Segregated Today? When I first read this prompt I immediately agreed with Beverly Daniel Tatum. When they said that schools are segregated in a different way today than 65 years ago I instantly thought about schools I have been to. I thought about instances I have seen and how they have segregated students but since they were still attending the same school as the majority of people it didn't matter to people. The video our unit had about redlining showed us one way how segregation still exists today. Minorities to this day have stayed in the "red area" and it was the predominant way they were segregated against. This "trapped" minorities in this cycle because when they outlawed all these practices they were stuck with the money they had and it was not enough to get them out. I loved how they called the game rigged. This all wraps back into school by the taxes that fund the school. This means since the schools weren't getting funded as much as t...

Money Problems

Money Problems           When I tell someone I plan to become a teacher money is one of the first things they mention. Unsurprisingly, this is the most popular comment when people hear someone is becoming a teacher.  When the unit mentioned that Texas had an F ranking for state spending I was shocked it was the worst tier but not surprised it was low. In all my times in the classroom no matter what the role was I have noticed the lack of funding for many things. I think what is most eye-opening is when you see classrooms before and after being teacher funded. If we were to send each student into the classroom only being funded by the school it would be sad to see how hard it would be to teach the students their required curriculum. The first article talked about the ranking system and what could cause each ranking. They came up with two observations. One the schools in poor communities often are ranked low and two the teacher workforce. The state...

How far will you go

What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child It is a legal right for all students to have access to free and fair education and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get ALL students this. I think all Teachers should think about "free and fair education and really think about what that truly means. To me, it means that no matter the gender, race, identity, etc. that child should get the same access to education. This means it is not fair to show all your students' stories and representation in other ways of people who are white when there are students who are not white. Teachers need to look at their own lessons too. Make sure to think of your assignment through the lens of your students and make sure it is culturally aware. I really liked the article about being a culturally responsive teacher and the points it listed. They talked about being a teacher who...  Understanding how learners construct knowledge Learning about students’ lives Being socio...

Gender in school

Image
Gender in School I do believe that gender affects the teaching profession. The main reason for my thinking of this is because teaching is a predominately female profession. When I was growing up there was only 1 single male teacher in my elementary school. After 10 years this is still common in many schools everywhere. I believe this lack of gender ratio is because society has been taught to believe that women were only meant to be mothers and they deserve fewer rights and can get paid less than men. This is a viewpoint shown by men and women because it has been implemented in society for so long. We saw it firsthand in the ad from Always in the module. Some people may not believe this but I think the quote from the podcast about how even though women make up the majority of the profession there is barely a quarter of women are represented in leadership positions will hopefully get them to look back and think about their own experiences in school. Again, I have seen this in perso...

Do I Have the Full Picture?

I think as teachers we tend to have a lot of empathy for people. Sometimes people find it hard to find the line between empathy and first-hand knowledge. Like the module we read this week said we all have our own stories and if you haven't lived someone's story you do not have the full picture. I really enjoyed the activity that was in one of the tasks for the module. Students draw a circle for a face and leave out any characteristics. The teacher then reads out prompts and they draw characteristics if they relate. I think this would be a good lesson to show not everyone's life is the same. Some people could have one thing in common but then People who are siblings don't even have the same story because a story is affected by so many external factors. We will never have the whole picture but that should never stop us from looking. Getting the parts of the pictures takes a long time to develop but we will have a better look at them with time and trust. I think it is...
