How far will you go
What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child
It is a legal right for all students to have access to free and fair education and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get ALL students this. I think all Teachers should think about "free and fair education and really think about what that truly means. To me, it means that no matter the gender, race, identity, etc. that child should get the same access to education. This means it is not fair to show all your students' stories and representation in other ways of people who are white when there are students who are not white. Teachers need to look at their own lessons too. Make sure to think of your assignment through the lens of your students and make sure it is culturally aware. I really liked the article about being a culturally responsive teacher and the points it listed. They talked about being a teacher who...
Understanding how learners construct knowledge
Learning about students’ lives
Being socio-culturally conscious
Holding affirming (not deficit) views about diversity
Using appropriate instructional strategies
Advocating for all students
I think these are good things for all teachers to check that they are doing in their day to day in their classrooms. I think all teachers will want to do this and it is just a matter of having the time and help from the admin at their school. I believe that this would be benificial for all the studnets in the classroom because they will want to learn when they can see themselves in the material.
Hey Sadie! I really love this discussion post! I think it is great how you said "it is not fair to show all your students' stories and representation in other ways of people who are white when there are students who are not white." This is a situation where teachers absolutely have to be incredibly aware of what the present in class through curriculum. It is important for children to be represented in the classroom curriculum regardless of race, gender, religion, etc. This representation is the difference between children feeling safe and comfortable or out of place and isolated.
ReplyDeleteHey Haley! Thanks for taking the time to read my discussion post. I am so glad you liked it. I am so glad you talked about being aware of who is in your classroom because after the courses I took this year I think that is the first step.
DeleteHey Sadie! I loved your post this week, I really enjoy the way it looks and is laid out. I really liked your perspective, that no matter the gender, race, identity, etc. Children should get the same access to education and to make sure that you are taking every student's point of view into consideration when creating lessons. I also think it is so important for teachers to learn about who their students are and where they come from. Another thing I think is so important is advocating for all students. We learned through reading about individual students' stories, and the problems teachers faced with these students that all it takes is some time, understanding, and patience. All students deserve fair and equal education and to be able to connect and see themselves through lessons and throughout their learning career. Overall students need to feel seen and safe and cared for in order to focus and learn.
ReplyDeleteHi Abbey! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog post. I am so glad you liked it. I loved what you said about advocating for students. As teachers, we need to advocate for our students because they can't themsleves yet. Thank you for your kind words.
DeleteHey Sadie! I enjoyed reading your thoughts over the lengths you are willing to go for your students. I especially liked your point over free and fair education. I believe that this is an important topic when understanding being culturally responsiveness. Another point that I think can be really important is forming relationships with your students, and being able to empathize and be compassionate to your students. Having a relationship with your students can help to better understand, communicate, and assist them. Allowing students to be creative and teaching them to use their voices will enhance their education, as well as, having students continuing to enjoy learning. Teaching and creating instruction based upon your students strengths can also help to encourage the learning process with your students. This can also benefit the classroom by as you explained having the students see themselves throughout the lessons, and create a classroom in which students feel comfortable and seen. All the points that you made about culturally responsive teachers will greatly benefit your students in your future classroom.
ReplyDeleteHey Sadie! I loved reading your post this week, I totally agree teachers should always remember that! I strongly feel that teachers think they are being inclusive and equal by doing small things, but fail to get the bigger picture across to the opposite skin tone. I remember in elementary we heavily celebrated Black/Hispanic history month, every week was packed with fun/educational presentations, programs, etc. But as the years progress, going through high school and middle school teachers don’t take time days/weeks out of their test learning material to teach their students things of substance. Things to help them better understand their classmates’ history, etc. If teachers were to do so, students would feel more included and even appreciated more.
ReplyDeleteHi Sadie, I really enjoyed reading your blog this week. You did a great job of writing about the topic “what lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child” and made great connections and refences as well. I really like how you said that teachers need to think about their assignments and to make sure that as a child it is okay and culturally aware. Can you add some more examples of this? However, I also agree with you about no matter the sex, gender, or race a child should always be offered an education and the right to learn. I believe that sometimes teachers don’t think about their teaching from a child’s perspective and how they might view things differently than a teacher would. It really important that all children feel comfortable in school and have a teacher that understands them and their culture. Great job!
