Do I Have the Full Picture?
I think as teachers we tend to have a lot of empathy for people. Sometimes people find it hard to find the line between empathy and first-hand knowledge. Like the module we read this week said we all have our own stories and if you haven't lived someone's story you do not have the full picture. I really enjoyed the activity that was in one of the tasks for the module. Students draw a circle for a face and leave out any characteristics. The teacher then reads out prompts and they draw characteristics if they relate. I think this would be a good lesson to show not everyone's life is the same. Some people could have one thing in common but then People who are siblings don't even have the same story because a story is affected by so many external factors. We will never have the whole picture but that should never stop us from looking. Getting the parts of the pictures takes a long time to develop but we will have a better look at them with time and trust. I think it is hard to know the difference between knowing parts of the story well and knowing the full story. For, example a student could come from a one-parent household and a teacher may understand that and see how it is affecting the students but there can be other parts of the story that make that story heightened. Hopefully, by adding some other resources we have talked about in previous modules can help us know the parts of the story students share with us.
Hey Sadie, I really enjoyed reading your blog. I like your second sentence highlighting that teachers have a hard time finding the line between empathy and knowledge. This statement is so true because in my opinion most teachers do not have ill intentions and genuinely care for their students, however sometimes they lack knowledge. I also agree that we will never get the full picture with our students but if we attempt we might be able to connect with them.
ReplyDeleteHi Alex! thank you so much for your kind words! I agree that most of the time teachers do not have ill intent! I think it is just as important to have parts of the story than to not try and have none!
