How far will you go

What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child It is a legal right for all students to have access to free and fair education and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get ALL students this. I think all Teachers should think about "free and fair education and really think about what that truly means. To me, it means that no matter the gender, race, identity, etc. that child should get the same access to education. This means it is not fair to show all your students' stories and representation in other ways of people who are white when there are students who are not white. Teachers need to look at their own lessons too. Make sure to think of your assignment through the lens of your students and make sure it is culturally aware. I really liked the article about being a culturally responsive teacher and the points it listed. They talked about being a teacher who...  Understanding how learners construct knowledge Learning about students’ lives Being socio...

Gender in school

Image
Gender in School I do believe that gender affects the teaching profession. The main reason for my thinking of this is because teaching is a predominately female profession. When I was growing up there was only 1 single male teacher in my elementary school. After 10 years this is still common in many schools everywhere. I believe this lack of gender ratio is because society has been taught to believe that women were only meant to be mothers and they deserve fewer rights and can get paid less than men. This is a viewpoint shown by men and women because it has been implemented in society for so long. We saw it firsthand in the ad from Always in the module. Some people may not believe this but I think the quote from the podcast about how even though women make up the majority of the profession there is barely a quarter of women are represented in leadership positions will hopefully get them to look back and think about their own experiences in school. Again, I have seen this in perso...

Do I Have the Full Picture?

I think as teachers we tend to have a lot of empathy for people. Sometimes people find it hard to find the line between empathy and first-hand knowledge. Like the module we read this week said we all have our own stories and if you haven't lived someone's story you do not have the full picture. I really enjoyed the activity that was in one of the tasks for the module. Students draw a circle for a face and leave out any characteristics. The teacher then reads out prompts and they draw characteristics if they relate. I think this would be a good lesson to show not everyone's life is the same. Some people could have one thing in common but then People who are siblings don't even have the same story because a story is affected by so many external factors. We will never have the whole picture but that should never stop us from looking. Getting the parts of the pictures takes a long time to develop but we will have a better look at them with time and trust. I think it is...
